Inherent Vice is a new queer heritage and arts zine exploring LGBTQIA+ material culture, histories, stories, creativity, and community within the heritage sphere.
Issue 1 includes a range of articles on LGBTQIA+ history and heritage projects from across the UK and Ireland.
The issue includes an opening piece from guest author Justin Bengry - queer historian, public speaker, and writer. He was Director of the Goldsmiths Centre for Queer History at the University of London where he led the world’s first MA in Queer History from 2017 to 2024.
The issue also takes its name from Justin’s words - “queer history is everyone’s history” - a reminder that queerness is not something separate or other, but something woven throughout the fabric of human existence.
About Inherent Vice :
Created with heritage professionals such as conservators, archivists, and collection carers in mind, Inherent Vice is also for anyone with an interest in queer culture. It aims to inspire new ideas, spark conversations, encourage allyship, inform practice, and help foster a queer space within heritage professions.
The zine's aim is to develop our collective understanding of queer heritage, empower advocacy within conservation and heritage settings for marginalised communities, inspire a reimagination of our professional roles, encourage the exploration of new collaborations, and to hold space for queerness in our sector.
